Measure the system

No single metric defines sustainability. Enrollment may rise while net tuition falls. Margin may improve while program quality or employee retention weakens. Leaders need a balanced view of mission delivery and operating capacity.

Use a small set of consequential indicators

Useful measures may include retention, inquiry conversion, net tuition, aid participation, compensation pressure, cash, contribution margin, staffing ratios, program demand, leadership stability, strategic progress, and mission-aligned student outcomes.

Add thresholds and forecasts

Current values are not enough. Show target, prior period, trend, forecast, and a threshold that triggers leadership attention. The dashboard should create decision time before a condition becomes an emergency.

LEADERSHIP ACTIONS

Put the insight to work.

  1. Choose twelve to fifteen consequential indicators.
  2. Show target, trend, forecast, and threshold together.
  3. Assign an owner and review frequency to each measure.
  4. Define the decision triggered by every red condition.
