Lagging indicators confirm the past

Year-end enrollment, audited results, and final retention totals matter, but they describe outcomes already produced. They cannot warn leaders early enough when inquiries are weakening, aid demand is rising, re-enrollment is slowing, or staffing commitments are outpacing revenue.

Leading indicators create decision time

Inquiry velocity, tour-to-application conversion, re-enrollment timing, tuition assistance requests, employee intent, cash collection patterns, and grade-level seat exposure can reveal pressure months before the budget shows it.

A dashboard should trigger action

A useful leadership dashboard defines thresholds, owners, and responses. A red indicator without a predetermined decision rule becomes decoration. Each measure should answer: what changed, why it matters, who owns it, and what happens next?

LEADERSHIP ACTIONS

Put the insight to work.

  1. Separate leading indicators from final outcomes.
  2. Set a threshold and owner for each critical measure.
  3. Review trends by grade, program, and time period.
  4. Connect every red indicator to a defined leadership response.
