More information is not more governance
Boards often receive long reports containing activity counts and departmental detail. Volume can obscure the few indicators that reveal whether the school is advancing mission, remaining sustainable, and managing material risk.
Governance requires trend and context
Enrollment, net tuition, margin, cash, retention, staffing, academic health, safety, and strategic-plan progress become useful when shown against targets, prior periods, thresholds, and forecasts.
Separate oversight from management
The dashboard should help the board ask the right questions and hold the head of school accountable without directing daily operations. Each measure needs a governance reason, a reporting cadence, and a clear owner.
